It’s impossible to trust Donald Trump on virtually any subject, but when the American electorate can’t trust even the smallest details of their own economy, it’s a much bigger problem than not being able to trust the president on whether or not he paid off porn stars.

Trump has repeatedly claimed that U.S. Steel is opening new plants. Several times, he’s stated that six new mills are opening, but that there will be even more. He’s also implied that the building is some kind of top secret information. On July 31 in Tampa, Florida, he said:

‘U.S. Steel just announced that they are building six new steel mills. And that number is soon going to be lifted, but I’m not allowed to say that, so I won’t.’

He’s made that claim several times, except on July 27, when he said it was seven new steel mills that were being built. None of that is true.

A spokeswoman for U.S. Steel, Meghan Cox, denied that any new steel mills are even planned, saying:

‘All of our operational changes have been publicly announced and all information shared with the federal government has been properly disclosed and made available on our website.’

The economy is, however, still on an upswing from the Obama recovery that began in 2010. Certain markers are showing that it is leveling off, though. Inflation is on the rise, which will increase prices and the cost of living for the average American. Wages are, once again, beginning to stagnate. The job market is no longer rising as quickly as it did in Obama’s final months in office.

Trump hasn’t wrecked the place yet, but he’s certainly not made many remarkable accomplishments, and especially not in building new U.S. steel mills.

Twitter was not buying it, and several steel workers weighed in to correct the president’s lies, as well. See some of their comments below:
