This Wednesday, the ongoing impeachment inquiry against President Donald Trump reached its latest stage with a public hearing held by the House Judiciary Committee. They hosted four Constitutional law professors as witnesses — three called by Democrats who agreed that Trump was guilty of impeachable offenses, and one GOP witness who made lousy claims like that Democrats have failed because they didn’t issue enough subpoenas… although the president has demanded that his aides ignore subpoenas. Clearly agitated, Donald Trump Jr. spent Wednesday morning on Twitter trying desperately to convince the world that his dad is in the clear. It didn’t exactly work.
After complaining about Twitter cracking down on the violent hate speech of right wing hack Andy Ngo, Trump Jr. turned to the hearing. He tweeted a Breitbart story that witness and Stanford Law Professor Pamela Karlan had donated to the Elizabeth Warren presidential campaign, as if that’s some kind of automatic disqualification because she dared associate with a Democrat. Yet again, the Trump team is railing against the process and failing to come up with a fact-based defense.
Trump Jr. eventually tweeted a quote from GOP witness Professor Jonathan Turley, who, while complaining about the supposed thinness of Democrats’ impeachment case, completely glossed over the dangerous precedent set by Donald Trump’s own behavior. He’s lied well over 13,000 times while in office. 13,000!
Turley complained:
‘I’m concerned about lowering impeachment standards to fit a paucity of evidence & an abundance of anger. I believe this impeachment not only fails to satisfy the standard of past impeachments it would create a dangerous precedent for future impeachments.’
Meanwhile, the rest of America is concerned about a president defining his time in office by “an abundance of anger.”
This Wednesday, Trump Jr. also parroted the “Democrats are pushing a witch hunt!” line, complained about CNN reporting on legitimate accusations of Devin Nunes collaborating with Ukraine schemers, complained about those seeking to hold his dad accountable for petty ranting at NATO, and suggested that Democrats corruptly collaborated with opposition researchers targeting Trump. To top it off, he “joked” — or something — about the scandal surrounding Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau having worn blackface some years ago, suggesting it proved the elder Trump’s assertion that Trudeau was “two-faced.”
