While the Republicans have been screwing around, offering empty “thoughts and prayers,” corporations have picked up the initiative to make changes and run with it. The Stoneman Douglas High School mass shooting survivors have touched the hearts of business across the country. Does that mean the GOP members are heartless?
After a gunman walked into the high school with an AR-15 weapon of war and mowed down 14 students and three staff, the National Rifle Association (NRA) waited a few days, then hit the kids hard. That was too much for a variety of corporations, and they withdrew their services for NRA card holders.
The latest business to show what real patriotism is was Dick’s Sporting Goods. This was big, because they sell firearms at their stores. Not only that, it is one of the largest major sports retailer in the U.S.
The sports store’s CEO, Ed Stack, announced that it will end the sales of assault-style rifles as of that moment. In addition, a customer must be 21 or older to purchase one of the guns.
Stack made the announcement on ABC’s Good Morning America. He said the 19-year-old high school mass killer bought a gun from Dick’s store. Although it was a shotgun instead of the one used in the shooting, they still felt corporate responsibility. He told NPR:
‘We did everything by the book. We did everything that the law required, and still he was able to buy a gun. And when we looked at that, we said the systems that are in place across the board just aren’t effective enough to keep us from selling a gun like that. And so we’ve decided we’re not going to sell the assault-type rifles any longer.’
Kudos to the company with 715 locations. Stack continued:
‘We’re staunch supporters of the Second Amendment. I’m a gun owner myself’. We’ve just decided that based on what’s happened and with these guns, we don’t want to be part of this story.’
