No matter how hard he tries, the president can’t get out of the Russia investigation. Special Counsel Robert Mueller has brought charges against associates as close to him as his former national security adviser, Michael Flynn, and he still seems to have the president in his sights.

Mueller is not understood to only be exploring the basic question of collusion with Russia during the confines of the 2016 U.S. presidential race; he’s also looking into the president’s personal finances to see if there is anything to be concerned about there.

That’s the context of a subpoena that The New York Times is now reporting Mueller has brought against the Trump Organization, demanding documents related to Russia and “other topics he is investigating,” in the description of the publication.

The Trump Organization has no real estate developments in Russia, but they have pursued seeing one go up there in the past. In addition, Mueller has been investigating whether there are any corrupt foreign ties on the part of the president, beyond just potential ties to Russia, that he used to propel himself to victory.

The president has maintained his innocence throughout this whole scandal, although the newly reported upon subpoena indicates that Mueller has significant reason to not just take the president’s word for it.

There has been talk about the president himself sitting down with Mueller’s team, but that hasn’t happened yet, although he’s insisted he’s open to the possibility.
