Trump’s entire platform has been centered around his slogan, “Make America Great Again.” He promised to punish companies that outsource jobs overseas and to restore manufacturing jobs, but still uses products manufactured overseas in his own businesses.
Jimmy Kimmel, host of ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live!, proved that the Trump family is still up to their old tricks on his show Wednesday night. Displaying products he purchased online from The Trump Store, which sells everything from coffee mugs to glove club covers emblazoned with the president’s name, Kimmel showed guests and viewers that all but two of the items he received were made in China, Thailand, or Peru.
The other two products, a gold bar piggy bank in which to save the whopping $1.50 hardworking Americans got out of Trump’s new tax plan and a pink pet bandanna, had no label showing their country of origin at all. If those two products, like the rest, were made overseas, failing to identify their country of origin is illegal and subject to fines.
Kimmel offered a solution to the problem.
‘This could be very expensive, not to mention this has got to be embarrassing. Are they capable of shame? I mean, Trump’s whole platform is about supporting American companies. His company isn’t even supporting America. You know what I’m going to do? I’m sure Eric and Don Jr. didn’t know about this. I’m sure this was a simple oversight. I’ll just file an official complaint, and let them sort it all out.’
In retaliation, The Trump Store made the regrettable choice to attack Jimmy Kimmel instead of answering the criticism or explaining their hypocrisy. Like the president, the store chose a Twitter fight.
Not only are none of the products advertised on the store’s webpages as “Made in the USA” the same two products Kimmel held up for inspection that didn’t identify their country of origin, the insinuation made is insulting to their customers. Instead of being outraged that their “make America great again” president refuses to use products made by American workers, The Trump Store just announced that it only drove them to purchase more items, send more money overseas, and continue to stiff American manufacturing.
Kimmel wasted no time responding to the dig and, despite The Trump Store’s attempt at an insult, his comedic chops are still very much honed.
