Trump’s focus in recent days has been as scattered and chaotic as his administrative team. Amazon and Jeff Bezos, Democrats and DACA, Russia and Hillary Clinton, Obama and immigration, all of these have sparked rants and tweets from the bombastic and flailing president recently.
His main fear-mongering focus lately has been the “caravan” of scary brown people trekking through Mexico bent on storming the U.S. border, and these mobs of terrifying criminals are such an imminent danger to good white folks that Trump was ready to post the National Guard at the border to head them off.
These terror-inducing criminals are, in fact, a group of migrants fleeing their home countries due to war and famine, human beings who have put themselves at great risk and through tremendous effort have worked to save themselves and their children. It is a journey that is planned once a year by an activist group hoping to help them escape violence, war, political turmoil, and starvation by organizing them into a large group who can help and protect one another while seeking safety.
According to The New York Times, the majority of these refugees intended only to reach Mexico. Shelters in place there expect this group every year and work to serve their basic needs with food and a safe bed to sleep in. Only about 15 percent of those migrants hoped to seek asylum in the United States, not to bring drugs or violence, but to ensure that their children could survive and flourish.
Mexico did not “break up” the horde, nor did they turn them away back into danger and hunger. They are doing what they can to help those whose lives are at stake while the American president struts and brags that the danger has been avoided due to his grade school bully tweets and promising that he’s not done demonizing brown people from “sh*thole” countries yet.
