If there’s one thing consistent about Donald Trump, it is that he will always deflect blame when he is caught doing wrong and he will take full credit and congratulate himself when something goes right, even if he was not solely or even instrumental in the achievement.
In a historic moment 68 years in the making that is the focus and celebration of every other source of news, Trump first mentioned his ire at James Comey, the former FBI director that Trump fired because of his lead in the investigation into the Trump 2016 presidential campaign and their alleged collusion with Russian government operatives.
While Trump insulted Comey by saying that he “can’t define what a leak is,” it seems that it’s Trump who either doesn’t understand what a leak is or who is hoping that his rabid fan base, eager to believe that any person in a position to speak against Trump in an official capacity, will not understand what a leak really is. Sharing an unclassified memo, a memo that not only related to a conversation with Trump but also pointed to actions Trump took that could constitute an obstruction of justice, is not a leak. Releasing statements to the press regarding FBI investigations is a only a leak if the person releasing those statements has no authority to do so.
Only two people had the authority to do so during the Hillary Clinton investigation into her use of a private email server: deputy FBI Director Andrew McCabe and Director James Comey.
Once Trump had finished further misinforming his voters about Comey and felt he had sufficiently divided the country along party lines for now, he moved to the subject of what is actually important in political news happening today. The Korean war began in 1950 and the division and hostility between North Korea and South Korea has lasted ever since. On Thursday night, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un crossed the border from North to South alongside South Korean President Moon Jae-in for the first time.
Trump cited help from Chinese President Xi Jinping, but only for his “help,” not because he or Moon Jae-in are significantly and equally as responsible for the advancement of diplomacy in North Korea, but because they acted as his “helpers.” Trump, of course, bears the sole responsibility for this historic day, or at least, he’s hoping his base will believe he does.
