The rapid turnover rate among the president’s senior staff members doesn’t end at the confines of his presidential administration. His personal legal team also remains in flux at present, with the announcement coming just this Wednesday that — despite the president’s past denials of reporting that such a move was coming — lawyer Ty Cobb had decided to leave his legal team. As Cobb left, the president’s legal team accepted a new member, Emmet Flood, who worked for President Bill Clinton when he was facing impeachment proceedings.

In the face of this shuffling, the president took to Twitter late Wednesday to attempt to fall back on past comments from someone who is himself a former member of his legal team, John Dowd. Dowd resigned as the lead lawyer for the president in his battle with the Russia probe back in March just a short time after explicitly calling for Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein to fire Special Counsel for the Russia investigation Robert Mueller.

Quoting Dowd, the president quipped on Twitter late Wednesday as follows:

‘“This isn’t some game. You are screwing with the work of the president of the United States.” John Dowd, March 2018. With North Korea, China, the Middle East and so much more, there is not much time to be thinking about this, especially since there was no Russian “Collusion.”’

No matter how many random sets of quotes the president puts in his tweets, he’s not going to be able to make the issue of his team’s collusion with Russia go away. Whether or not the Trump team colluded is no longer a question thanks to things like Donald Trump Jr.’s eager acceptance of help from the Russian government against Hillary Clinton back in 2016.

There’s an easy way for the scandal to take more of a back seat than it has at present — if the president stopped whining about it at what seems like every opportunity, we’d talk about it less, it could run its course, and that would be that.

However, the fact that the president is continuing to go on and on indicates that he’s not really that committed to letting the investigation conclude as he claims. He enjoys the attention and continues to dig his hole deeper and deeper, having explicitly threatened the Justice Department Wednesday morning, when he wrote on Twitter that he was prepared to use the “powers granted to the Presidency” to make the justice system fall more in line with his wishes.
