Could it have been only four short months ago when Donald Trump called his personal attorney and fixer a “fine person with a wonderful family” who Trump had “always liked & respected”? That has certainly changed dramatically in recent days, and the past 24 hours has accelerated the change.
On Tuesday, the embattled personal attorney Michael Cohen, who once insisted he would “take a bullet” for Trump, gave testimony during a guilty plea that made the president an unindicted co-conspirator in the felony crime of campaign finance violations. That accusation stems from hush payments made by Cohen on behalf of Trump to two separate former mistresses: adult film star and actress Stormy Daniels and former Playboy Playmate Karen McDougal.
Despite both payments being made during the 2016 presidential campaigns, neither was reported as campaign donations and both exceeded the limits for campaign donations. Both payments were also made through a shell company to keep them quiet and unattached to the president, which is a clear indication that Trump and Cohen both knew what they were doing was illegal and made efforts to cover up the crimes.
The tweet is ironic considering all of Trump’s bragging about how he “hits back” at claims made against him, which is how he excuses the actions he’s committed that have led to a probe of obstruction of justice in Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation of alleged collusion between Trump’s campaign and Russian government operatives. Trump’s “hitting back” against Cohen apparently goes no farther than what amounts to a bad Yelp review.
