It seems Donald Trump is not the only man in Washington, D.C. who hires criminals to work for him. An incident near the capitol building involving an intern to a high-profile Republican congressman ended in an arrest when it appeared dangerous to D.C. police.
A young intern for Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) was apparently not briefed on the very strict laws around guns and ammunition near our nation’s capital. CNN reports that:
‘According to a statement from US Capitol Police provided to CNN, officers were called to a “dispute” between the intern and another individual in a vehicle near the US Capitol. Officers observed the unregistered ammunition in the back of the vehicle and arrested 20-year-old Scott M. Frantz around 3 p.m. ET, according to the report.’

Frantz was arrested for “possession of unregistered ammunition,” which carries up to a $1000 fine as well as a year in prison. Why the intern for one of the NRA’s favorite politicians felt the need to carry ammunition without reporting it, and have it on him during an altercation, is unknown.

Cruz is currently in a dead heat in the polls ahead of the November midterm elections to retain his Senate seat against the popular and quickly-rising Democratic star Beto O’Rourke, and the two candidates differ on many issues. One issue that has been a repeated theme between the two is O’Rourke’s refusal to accept money from super PACs and Cruz’s massive donations from the NRA.

Cruz’s office is not commenting on the arrest. According to CNN, “a spokeswoman for Cruz, Maria Jeffrey, told CNN in an email: ‘Our office does not comment on pending law enforcement or personnel matters.'” Cruz seems to have personnel matters frequently. One year ago today, an intern for Ted Cruz was blamed for “liking” a hardcore porn video as the senator’s Twitter account.

The intern has reportedly been placed on leave pending an investigation.
