At the end of a day in which your campaign manager pleads guilty to felonies and agrees to cooperate in investigations against you, your SCOTUS pick is accused of sexual assault, and a hurricane lashes the east coast, what better way to comfort yourself than lie in bed watching Fox News and cursing President Obama for being well-liked? This seems to be the Trump prescription for self-care.
Barack Obama, who was a primary candidate for president at the time in 2008, did say he had visited 57 states. It was a year and a half into the campaigns and he had just completed a tour visiting 57 primary districts.
That gaffe was not something Trump caught all on his own. He knows about the mistake because it was covered in the media. For instance, The Los Angeles Times ran a story about it, Fox News crowed about it repeatedly, it became a joking video on YouTube, and right-wingers brought it up repeatedly for eight years.
That slip of the tongue, something that has happened to every president (George W. Bush’s “won’t get fooled again” slip comes to mind), is not the same as the wild and misleading claims that Trump says publicly with the intent to plant false information that he then repeats and doubles down on over and over again.
His tax cuts aren’t the biggest in history, his inauguration crowd wasn’t the biggest ever, he didn’t win by the largest electoral college margin in history, and 2,975 people really did die in Puerto Rico as the result of hurricanes and a failed response to them.
