President Donald Trump maintains a fiercely partisan agenda, even while dealing with issues that affect all Americans – and in many cases, millions and even billions of people around the world. This Saturday, hours after having taken to the golf course for the well over 150th time as president, Trump took to Twitter to amplify the messages of a few ranting conservatives, including Fox News talking head Dan Bongino and Republican Congressmen Dan Crenshaw (Texas) and Mark Meadows (N.C.).
The messages were chock full of conspiracy theories and misinformation.
For instance, after sharing how he’d had an amendment to the recently passed ethics reform package H.R. 1 rejected that asserted that “only U.S. citizens should have the right to vote,” Crenshaw asserted:
‘Next time you go to the ballot box, keep that in mind. The future of their party is in cities like San Fran, where illegals can vote. Let that sink in.’
In reality, “illegals” can not vote in federal elections in San Francisco, although they can chime in to help choose who serves on the local school board, which fits with the fact that local schools do not turn away undocumented children. Those votes are a non-issue, and do not represent some kind of national Democratic agenda, making their no need and place for legislation further singling out non-citizens. Crenshaw and Trump are making an issue where there’s not one.
Trump wasn’t done though. He also parroted the suggestion from Meadows that before his recent public Congressional testimony, Democrats had “led” former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen, considering ten alleged hours of meetings they participated in together, although those meetings did not happen as Meadows claimed.
Connecticut Democratic Congressman Jim Rimes replied simply:
‘Mark, I was in the room. No one said Adam met with Cohen for 10 hours. That didn’t happen. Will you take down your post?’
Fox News had claimed that Cohen met for somewhere around that period of time with Schiff’s staff, not the Congressman. The meetings consisted of pre-testimony prep — Cohen spoke to Schiff’s intelligence panel the day after he testified publicly.
Again, there’s an issue being raised without relevant substance.
Trump wasn’t done this Saturday, adding a rambling post from Bongino:
‘Is there anything that the Democrats stand for that aligns with American values anymore? Now that they’ve gone all-in on anti-Semitism, infanticide, socialism, open borders, & police-state spying, what’s left of this shell of a party?’
He ended up adding an angry jab at the governor of California, seemingly completely lacking in self-awareness since he criticized him as “grandstanding” after opposition to the president’s evidence-free immigration policies.
