The 2020 election cycle is heating up, so except the fear-mongering and insane rhetoric around immigration (but only immigration from south of the U.S. border) to ramp up on Donald Trump’s Twitter account. Trump openly threatened the government of a country that is one of our two closest neighbors. This is the president of the United States.
Immigration to the United States is not Mexico’s problem. Since 2013, more people have immigrated to Mexico than to the United States each year. As a reminder, the United States had a Democratic president at that time. The United States currently has a net negative immigration flow with Mexico. Since 2007, the number of immigrants from Mexico living in the United States has dropped by one million people.
Trump is truly playing up his ploy to get emergency funds to build a southern border wall, which he promised his voters in 2016, after declaring a national crisis. The only crisis at the border is the only Trump created. With his threats to close the border, desperate people are crossing to get through while they have a chance, and the number of detained border crossers is creating a crisis in some border cities.
Every solution Trump has offered for this non-existent “crisis” has led to chaos and harm. Children have been lost, died in detention, reported sexual and physical abuse, and adults are faring no better. This is what Trump says is his administration being “nice.”
Twitter was appalled by Trump’s stupidity, but no one was going to let him forget Fox and Friends’ “3 Mexican Countries” gaffe, either. Read some of their comments below:
