President Donald Trump continues to melt down on Twitter on an almost daily basis while expecting us to take him seriously. In what other universe does a president of the United States get a pass to make up nicknames for people on social media he doesn’t like? This Monday, he went after targets including union leaders and New York state authorities, who he perceives as opposed to his agenda of supposed economic expansion. He railed:
‘I’ll never get the support of Dues Crazy union leadership, those people who rip-off their membership with ridiculously high dues, medical and other expenses while being paid a fortune. But the members love Trump. They look at our record economy, tax & reg cuts, military etc. WIN!.. The Dues Sucking firefighters leadership will always support Democrats, even though the membership wants me. Some things never change!’
Imagine how far we’ve fallen for a president of the United States to spend his late Monday morning on Twitter ranting against firefighters. Firefighters!
Anyway, it’s a lie for Trump to claim that he has managed some kind of massive groundswell of support among union members. Cornell University’s Roper Center for Public Opinion Research concluded that union households went for Hillary Clinton in the 2016 presidential election at a significantly higher rate than they went for Trump. In their calculations, Clinton got 51 percent of the union households while Trump only got 43. He can claim victory among other groups, like non-union households, those 45 years old and up, and people with $50,000-$100,000 in yearly income — but he can’t claim union households, even though he really seems to be hoping to run on the steam of that lie.
This lie-fest was sparked because newly announced Democratic presidential candidate and former Vice President Joe Biden garnered the endorsement of the International Association of Firefighters, which was the first major union to offer any endorsement in the race. On Monday, for his first major event as a presidential candidate, Biden was slated to address the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, a large union.
Besides his complaints about union leaders and Biden, Trump also took aim at New York state leaders in his social media meltdowns this Monday, claiming them to have enacted economic “oppression.”
