AOC Speaks Out Against Trump’s Upcoming ICE Raids Like A Hero

Although under the Trump administration, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has proven a consistent threat for immigrant communities, they have raids newly planned for coming days targeting thousands of undocumented immigrants across the United States. Prominent progressive Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) joined those speaking out against the plans this week, telling all who would listen about the rights of these people when confronted with these authorities, including that they’re allowed to refuse authorities entry to their home in the absence of a judicial warrant. In the past, ICE has demonstrated a seeming lack of care for the family and societal situations in which immigrants are, tearing apart families — not to mention the treatment immigration authorities as a whole have inflicted upon asylum seekers arriving at the southern border who don’t even end up embedded in the U.S. society.

Ocasio-Cortez shared:

‘ICE will launch raids across 10 major cities this SUNDAY. Check your neighbors & know your rights. Remember: no one can enter your home without a *judicial warrant.* Sometimes ICE will try to show other papers to get in your house. Judicial warrants are from a court.’

This is not the first situation in which the Trump administration would like Americans to forget that undocumented immigrants still have basic human rights in the United States too. Right now, they’re also seeking to force a question about respondents’ citizenship into the upcoming census, which would essentially function as an eraser of immigrant communities, possibly including those with documentation too, who would be intimidated into not answering. The Constitution demands that the census measure the number of people in the United States — not just those who fit into the mold of white Americans. With the Trump administration’s plans, we might as well be rolling back all the way to the 1700s when slaves were only counted as 3/5ths of a person!

These upcoming planned ICE raids had been set for a point in recent weeks, but at Congressional Democrats’ urging, they were postponed for a time in order for a possible immigration deal with the Trump administration. Right at the beginning of that period, Trump showed how disinterested he was in pursuing a compromise and said he didn’t think it would even happen — and it has not.
