Donald Trump has been trying to do as much damage as he can toward tearing up America’s democracy. He has pulled the nation out of treaties and injured long-time relationships with allies. He might be on the verge of causing a global recession with his tariffs while ruining family farming at home. It just got worse.
Surely, he is not intelligent enough to keep so many plates of destruction spinning. The man in the Oval Office has installed internment camps, ripped nursing babies from their mother’s arms, and caged children. Now, he has taken on ending citizenship for children of noncitizens born while they were in the U.S. That would include the children of people who immigrated illegally.
Trump stood before a scrum of reporters outside the White House and said:
‘We’re looking at that very seriously, birthright citizenship, where you have a baby on our land, you walk over the border, have a baby – congratulations, the baby is now a U.S. citizen. … It’s frankly ridiculous.’
It is ironic that Trump has had such a dislike for immigration given that his mother immigrated from Scotland and his grandfather immigrated from Germany. Two of his three wives were also immigrants from Eastern European countries, including First Lady Melania Trump.
The president has been slicing away at the immigration rules by means of executive orders. Most of them have landed in court, but that has not prevented him from throwing one unpleasant surprise after another unpleasant surprise at the wall.
As early as October 2018, he told Axios that he intended to end “birthright citizenship” with an executive order. However, the Constitution’s 14th Amendment granted full citizenship rights to “all persons born or naturalized in the United States.”
