The day started out with Donald Trump being true to form. Hurricane Dorian is bearing down upon Puerto Rico, but residents have not recovered from Hurricane Maria two years ago. Many still live with blue tarps instead of roofs. POTUS still has not released the majority of their relief money. What he is doing with it instead is appalling.
The president has boldly stolen disaster relief funds and is using it to detain up to 50,000 refugees. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) tweeted that Trump’s “brazen theft” was “stunningly reckless:”
‘@realDonaldTrump’s brazen theft of disaster relief funding to pay for an inhumane family incarceration plan is cruel — and doing so on the eve of hurricane season is stunningly reckless.’
The White House has taken hurricane relief money and money from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) funds and diverted $271 million for purposes other than it was designated. Legislators marked the money for disaster relief and other issues, and the president should not move it. Yet, POTUS wanted to be able to further detain immigrants who come to the U.S. border to legally seek asylum.
The money would pay for private detention (holding) centers. The president also tried to change a rule in court that would have let him detain the refugees indefinitely and without oversight.
Many of those refugees have been coming from violent Central American countries riddled with draught.
