On a near daily basis at this point, Americans are reminded of the huge gap in leadership capacity between President Donald Trump and former President Barack Obama. On the same day on which an interview with Trump aired on Fox Radio in which he pushed unhinged conspiracies that cable news host Joe Scarborough is secretly a murderer, Obama took to Twitter with a recap of important information for Americans. Following days of intense demonstrations against police brutality that have unfolded around the country, Obama shared articles outlining the dangers of police departments’ escalations of violence, the positive possibilities of constructive change in local politics, and the dangers of Trump’s proposal to use the military against protesters.

Alongside an article reporting on the election of Ella Jones as the first African-American and first woman tapped as the mayor of early Black Lives Matter flashpoint Ferguson, Missouri, Obama called the story a “reminder of the difference politics and voting can make in changing who has the power to make real change in a community like Ferguson with a history of blatant discriminatory law enforcement practices.”

Obama also shared what he called “an extraordinary essay by the former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the U.S. Armed Forces, Mike Mullen, explaining the values at risk when we start using our military to control domestic protests.” The president has already dispatched the military to D.C., where they’ve confronted protesters with disturbing force like a recent “show of force” in which a huge military helicopter flew barely 100 feet above demonstrators, as if the military was treating the streets of the nation’s capital like a war zone.
