Americans are so tired of Trump’s continual barrage of rage, cruelty, and yes, malevolence. Both of the Obamas have returned to the limelight as former Vice President Joe Biden runs against Donald Trump. The couple is a very fountain of hope, opportunity, and basic goodness. What a contrast.

Wednesday, the former first lady launched a podcast, and guess who is her first guest? For sure, it is not the sitting POTUS. No, she invited President Barack Obama. So what was her podcast all about today?

Michelle Obama is extremely intelligent, but she does not lord that over people. Instead, she has listened to people of all ages and responded to them. She said her first podcast will discuss “our relationship with our community and our country,” according to CNN. Her respect for young people was palatable.

The couple discussed a range of topics from George Floyd’s death to education to neighborhood. Michelle Obama talked about isolation and loneliness:

‘[Success] felt isolating. And you know, I had this amazing view of the southeast side of the city from my office. I could see the lake and I could see all of the neighborhood that had I come from. And I never felt further from that neighborhood than when I was sitting in that office working on briefs and cases that had nothing to do with anything that helped a broader group of people outside of myself.’

The 44th president said:

‘I think I figured out once I got to school that if I am chasing after my own success, that somehow, I am going to end up alone and unhappy. And that’s why I ended up going into community organizing and the work that I was doing because when I thought about how I want to spend my life, what I looked at was what those civil rights workers had done…And the freedom riders had done. And I thought, you know, that looks like hard work but it never looks like lonely work. That looks like hard and risky work but it never looks like selfish, isolated, meaningless work.’

Michelle Obama said she is concerned about young people:

‘[She often hears] too many young people who question whether voting, whether politics is worth it.’

Barack Obama added:

‘Well, partly because they have been told. The message is sent every day that government doesn’t work. They take for granted all the things that a working government has done in the past… in some ways, we’re still living on the investment that was made by that greatest generation.’

She joked:

‘[S]ome young people know more about the cereal they are eating than what government is doing because government does not have marketing budgets. They both agreed that it seems the time young people understand what is happening in government is when it is not working.’

Barack Obama added after a while that this generation has been facing the “coronavirus pandemic and building infrastructure:”

‘The danger for this generation is that they have become too deeply cynical in government. Not understanding that all government is, is us collectively making decisions together. They’re just certain things that you have to do collectively cause they’re too big, they’re too expensive.’

She explained her enthusiasm:

‘So excited for you to hear the first episode of The #MichelleObamaPodcast with @BarackObama! I wanted to start this season off by discussing our relationship with our community and our country. I hope you’ll tune in on @Spotify: https://t.co/iEjVDPIxEs. pic.twitter.com/9svSKNHRZ0
