President Donald Trump continues to try and bury the failures of his presidency under a cascade of tweets. This Monday morning, he posted nine tweets before 10 a.m. in which he ranted and raved about the news of the day, desperately trying to convince observers that his administration is actually getting along just fine. Among other things, he posted more brazen lies about mail-in voting, claimed that the U.S. has done great in responding to the Coronavirus although around 158,000 Americans have died, and touted the high ratings for Fox & Friends, the morning Fox show that Trump routinely watches. Americans are dying at a rate of hundreds per day due to the Coronavirus, and the president is focused on Fox’s television ratings.

His lies about mail-in voting included the claim that Nevada’s Democratic governor is carrying out some kind of conspiracy against election integrity via plans to mail a ballot to every voter in the state. Mail-in voting is already used at a high rate throughout the United States, and it’s increasing in usage now because of a very obviously non-conspiratorial reason: the Coronavirus pandemic makes it precarious to gather in-person in large groups, like at a polling place. Trump just has problems with reality.

Meanwhile, it’s amazingly pathetic how detached that the president is from the actual reality of the Coronavirus pandemic in the United States. Many states are seeing increased rates of new cases and deaths. On Sunday — a slow day for reporting! — the U.S. reported about 49,000 new cases of the virus across the country, and some of these cases will end in death. Yet, the president claims that the U.S. is actually doing great and insists that the U.S. has so many cases because it does so much testing, which is completely incorrect. The virus would still be spreading and killing people if not a single test was performed. This is not a public relations game. It’s a real-world crisis.

Trump also complained about Dr. Deborah Birx, a member of the White House Coronavirus response task force. He seemed upset that she pointed people to the basic reality of the pandemic in the United States, as if that’s some kind of “attack” on the president’s public image. It’s not.
