President Barack Obama was facing some high expectations with his speech at the Democratic National Convention after his wife and former First Lady Michelle Obama moved viewers to tears on Monday night, and he lived up to every one of them. Taking Donald Trump to the woodshed, Obama spoke eloquently, graciously, but still got his point about the dangers this country faces with another four years of a Trump administration.

After a clip featuring Obama awarding Vice President Joe Biden the Presidential Medal of Freedom, Obama began speaking about the current state of the country under Donald Trump, and reminded voters of the crucial stakes in the 2020 elections.
‘This isn’t a normal convention. It’s not a normal time…What we do these next 76 days will echo for days to come.’
Barack Obama: "At minimum, we should expect a president to feel a sense of responsibility for the safety and welfare of all 330 million of us – regardless of what we look like, how we worship, who we love, how much money we have – or who we voted for."

Obama said that, at the very least, we should expect a president to be a “custodian of this democracy,” putting his ego aside to honor “what Americans fought for and died for.” While he said that he did originally “hope that Donald Trump might take the job seriously,” and “feel the weight of the office,” it’s become obvious by now that “he never did.”
‘He has shown no interest in putting in the work, finding common ground, using the awesome power of his office to help anyone besides himself and his friends.’

He called out the Trump administration as a failure, and said that “the consequences of that failure are severe.” After four years of Donald Trump, more than 170,000 Americans are dead from a global pandemic that could have been prevented. American jobs, much of which were regained after the 2009 crash under the Obama administration, are gone while the top 1% are profiting. This is Trump’s America, and voters have the chance to fix it in November.
