Democratic nominee for president Joe Biden has been leading Donald Trump in the polls by a significant and consistent number of points. In November, people will make perhaps the most important vote in their lives. Trump has increasingly broken laws, traditions, and norms during his first four years in office. If he wins this election, he will let loose his dictatorial tendencies with all the fury of the Norse God Thor and the sound of the god’s thunder.
In the latest poll CBS News-YouGov Poll, well over half of the likely voters, 52 percent, were going for Biden.
More than half of likely voters, 52 percent, said they would cast their ballots for Biden, and Trump came in with only 42 percent. That 10-point difference is huge in the polling world. That and the large lead Biden has consistently maintained work against POTUS in a statistically significant way. However, there are three considerable problems.
Before the Democrats get too cocky, they need to consider that many of Trump’s core voters hate the government. Unfortunately, they tie polls to the disliked government. It would not be too great of a leap to show that this submerged submarine of Americans behind Trump will come out on November 3 to vote, then crawl back into their murky pond.
Second, we cannot tell what Trump and his Russian supporters will do to skew the voting process. Already he has been imploding the US Postal Service (USPS), accepting Russian assistance, and even using Russian talking points.
Third, the immediate fallout from Trump’s negative comments about veterans appears to be rather crippling. Conversely, how long that effect holds is in doubt.
The poll only showed three percent of likely voters who were “not sure” whom they would vote for. Another three percent of the voters planned on voting for someone other than the two main candidates.
The results of this poll indicated that voters did not so much like Biden and his policies as opposed the president. They said they would vote for him, 49 percent, “mainly to oppose” the president who only took 32 percent.
Trump supporters have not been shy. A full 73 percent of his core voters will vote “mainly because” they like the president. Only 18 percent were voting for him “mainly to oppose” Biden.
When it came to the economy, 44 percent chose Biden while 45 percent chose Trump. As important, Trump’s mishandling of the coronavirus epidemic has worked against him. Likely voters in this poll chose Biden in half the cases, and only 38 percent chose Trump.
The president has been on a crash course to get a COVID-19 vaccine into the arms of American voters. Still, he only took 43 percent on this topic while Biden took 34 percentage points.
Trump’s attempts to turn the peaceful protests against Biden have not been working either. There was 47 percent who thought Trump was “encourage the fighting.” Only 30 percent of Democrats thought Biden was attempting to “calm the situation.”
The CBS News-YouGov Poll consisted of 2,493 registered voters from across American from September 2 to September 4. The margin of error was only 2.4 +/- percentage points, which is considered fairly accurate.
