It is so refreshing to have a real national leader speak to the moments we face every day with the coronavirus pandemic, the teetering economy, and a constipated Senate thanks to Senate Leader “Moscow Mitch” McConnell (R-KY). President Barack Obama showed us how to relieve those worries, if only for a bit.
He tweeted out his 9/11 message, reminding the country of how a president should act, something easily forgotten today. The 44th president reminded us to find “even the smallest act of service,” and honor those who lost their lives. Perhaps, he wants us to carry that forward into our current situation. Obama wrote:
‘Today we remember the lives we lost on 9/11. Even the smallest act of service is a way to honor them. And just like Jay Winuk, we can honor their memories through service. 911day.org’
Jay Winuk honors his brother as “someone who always went the extra mile to help others.” Jay showed us what courage looks like when today’s Republican leaders exhibit so much cowardice. He told us about when his brother “ran toward the World Trade Center.” In his last few precious moments, he saved others:”
‘Jay Winuk remembers his brother Glenn as someone who always went the extra mile to help others. On Sept. 11, 2001, Glenn first helped evacuate his co-workers from their building, then ran towards the World Trade Center where he spent the final moments of his life saving (sic) others.’
The Obama Foundation is about community and change:
‘We were founded by community organizers, so when we seek change, we do it by bringing people together.
His message rings true to all communities and any time:
‘But that approach extends to all our work, whether it’s holding leadership training sessions in communities throughout the U.S., bringing local leaders together in countries around the world, working to support the global education of girls, or ensuring young men of color have pathways to opportunity.’
President Barack Obama managed to lift Americans up from our personal anxiety about everything from how to keep our children safe at home to whether Donald Trump will find a way to turn the USA into a dictatorship. Thanks, Obama.
