President Donald Trump may wish to claim that he has been some kind of pseudomessianic savior for the United States, but he has not. He has presided over societal crash after societal crash, and he has barely ever taken any meaningful steps to systematically address the crises. The steep nationwide death toll from the Coronavirus helps prove the current administration’s total lack of fitness for office. In a new Twitter message, former President Barack Obama calls Americans’ attention to the jobs record of America’s modern presidents, including Trump. As of the time that Obama’s data was gathered, Trump was the only president in modern American history to preside over a net loss of jobs.

The job crisis, of course, has been propelled by the Coronavirus crisis. Just this week, Trump announced that he had ordered the end of comprehensive Coronavirus-connected economic relief negotiations between the White House and Congressional Democrats, suggesting that there’s no sudden bright spot on the horizon when all the lost jobs will reappear. (Trump eventually claimed that he still wanted something, like direct payments to Americans, to happen, but negotiations are still stalled.) Not only that, but the economy has plunged into such a deep crisis that even adding millions of jobs would mean barely breaking even. At the time of Obama’s data, the U.S. had lost a total of 4 million jobs under Trump.

The former president shared:

‘Joe Biden has a plan to build our country back better and create millions of jobs—jobs that can help working families get ahead. Joe helped manage the Recovery Act, which jumpstarted the longest stretch of job growth in our history. And he’ll do it again.’

The Recovery Act is the economic stimulus package that was enacted during the early part of the Obama administration, following the housing bubble collapse and recession of the Bush years. According to the data that Obama presented, his own administration subsequently presided over an addition of 12 million jobs to the U.S. economy, which is four times higher than Trump’s current level. (The source for Obama’s data is the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis.)

Biden himself is among those who have criticized Trump for ordering the end of comprehensive Coronavirus-connected economic relief negotiations. Biden commented:

‘Make no mistake: if you are out of work, if your business is closed, if your child’s school is shut down, if you are seeing layoffs in your community, Donald Trump decided today that none of that — none of it — matters to him.’
