“When they go low, we go high” is the mantra that Michelle Obama said her family used. Well, as it turns out, not all of the time. At least not for our 44th president.
The Atlantic magazine staff writer Edward Isaac Dovere’s soon-to-be-published book told more, according to The POLITICO. In Battle for the Soul: Inside the Democrats’ Campaigns to Defeat Donald Trump, Dovere wrote about our admired president going off on Trump a number of times during donor events or to advisers.
The Guardian released excerpts of Dovere’s book talking about exactly what President Obama said throughout the 2016 campaign. He called him a “madman” in 2017, after Trump took office.
Dovere quoted President Obama:
‘I didn’t think we’d have a racist, sexist pig. He also referred to Trump as “that f—ing lunatic” and a “corrupt motherf—er.’
That is so contrary to what we usually think of our brilliant, classy president. And it has been a tradition for former presidents to refrain from criticizing the next presidents in office, especially during the beginning. Only recently did President George W. Bush say anything negative about Donald Trump.
Earlier this year, The New York Times discovered that Obama had told some of his donors that Trump’s rhetoric was “nativist, racist, sexist:”
‘What he has unleashed and what he continues to try to tap into is the fears and anger and resentment of people who, in some cases, really are having a tough time and have seen their prospects, or communities where they left, declining. And Trump tries to tap into that and redirect in nativist, racist, sexist ways.’
Trump’s personal attorney and fixer Michael Cohen wrote in his book Disloyal about 45’s racist comments about Obama and even the late South African leader and civil rights icon Nelson Mandela.
