So who is Representative Liz Cheney (R-WY)? To begin with, her father Dick Cheney was President George W. Bush’s (R) vice president. Her mother writes borderline kinky novels and is certainly no shrinking violet, an equal match for the representative’s father. The elder Cheney had been tasked with finding W. a vice president. But after his search, he said that the best person for the job was himself. And the rest, as they say, was history — literally. Liz Cheney hails from very strong conservative genes.

She stood up to Congress as the first to decry Donald Trump’s attempts to render our democracy into ashes. Later one other Republican had the spine to join her, Representative Adam Kinzinger (R-IL), according to NPR. The rest cowed before the ex-president to save their own jobs.

Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) originally wanted a fully bipartisan National Commission, but the Republican leadership refused, according to The Washington Post:

‘Sadly, as of last week, there remains no prospect for additional votes from Republican Senators to create the National Commission to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the United States Capitol Complex.’

‘January 6th was one of the darkest days in our nation’s history. It is imperative that we establish the truth of that day and ensure such an attack cannot again happen.’

Thursday, the Select Committee’s Chair Bennie Thompson, (D-MS) named Liz Cheney vice-chair as it continues to investigate the January 6 failed coup at the Capitol. In a statement, Thompson said they must keep the Committee bipartisan, NBC News reported:

‘We are fortunate to have a partner of such strength and courage, and I look forward to continuing our work together as we uncover the facts, tell the American people the full story of January 6th, and ensure that nothing like that day ever happens again.’

Cheney said that every one of the Committee’s members was “dedicated to conducting a non-partisan, professional, and thorough investigation of all the relevant facts:”

‘We owe it to the American people to investigate everything that led up to, and transpired on, January 6th. We will not be deterred by threats or attempted obstruction and we will not rest until our task is complete.’

House Freedom Caucus, Andy Biggs (R-AZ) wrote in a letter to the House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) saying:

‘We urge you to allow consideration of a proposed change to the rules for the Republican Conference regarding committee membership. This proposal is not because of a policy or political difference, but because some members have chosen to work with the Democrats to investigate and potentially remove Republican members from the House.’

The Committee has been gearing up. This week the panel noted that it would request the preservation of House Republicans’ records by the telecommunications companies, which caused an uproar in the not-so-Grand Old Party.
