Representative Liz Cheney (R-WY) appeared on CBS’ 60 Minutes Sunday in a way that made us feel that old solid sense of patriotism re-emerge no matter which party we live in today. She emphatically does not answer to the ex-president, just the American Constitution. Donald Trump should be afraid, very afraid. And she stands firmly, with not one instant of doubt. But the Wyoming representative did something rather spectacular during her interview with Leslie Stahl.
She is definitely her father’s daughter, but not his only daughter. From the time people discovered that Mary Cheney was gay and married to another woman, former Vice President Dick Cheney supported her in his understated way. Liz Cheney did not.
On Sunday, the Republican lawmaker said “I was wrong.” There it was, blunt, brief, no question. Rarely does a politician ever admit to being wrong. But she did. And she repeated it “I was wrong” about same-sex marriage.
Liz and Mary were estranged after the representative claimed she was against gay marriage. But since then, the two women have reconciled. Mary married her wife Heather Poe in 2012. Liz is married and has five children ranging from their teens up to 27-years-old and calls herself a “Cowboy Mom.” She told Stahl, according to The Daily Beast:
‘I love my sister very much.’
Mary Cheney responded, saying that she was “proud” of her sister for having the strength to say she was wrong, according to The Associated Press (AP):
‘I love my sister very much and am so proud of her. It took a ton of courage to admit that she was wrong back in 2013 when she opposed marriage equality.’
‘That is something few politicians would ever do. I have nothing but respect and admiration for the strength of character she continues to show on a daily basis.” [And being a younger sibling, Mary also got in her dig] “And as her sister – I have one more thing that I just have to say… I told you so.”’
Mary Cheney wrote this message on her Facebook page:
