It’s refreshing to see the House January 6 Select Committee operating as Congress was meant to. For decades, dark money has financed the great divide between the parties, the courts, and Americans. But our love of country has won out in the end each time.
This week Trump filed legal action to stop the handover of documents related to the insurrection investigation. This frivolous lawsuit will go nowhere fast because the Committee reaches above petty politics and even above party to do their work, the work of the people.
Select Committee Chair Bennie G. Thompson’s (D-MS) and Vice Chair Liz Cheney’s (R-WY) were having none of Trump’s nonsense and released a statement that read:
“The former President’s clear objective is to stop the Select Committee from getting to the facts about January 6th and his lawsuit is nothing more than an attempt to delay and obstruct our probe. Precedent and law are on our side.”
This statement makes clear that the committee isn’t messing around. They will get answers.
Their statement continues:
‘Executive privilege is not absolute and President Biden has so far declined to invoke that privilege. Additionally, there’s a long history of the White House accommodating congressional investigative requests when the public interest outweighs other concerns. It’s hard to imagine a more compelling public interest than trying to get answers about an attack on our democracy and an attempt to overturn the results of an election.’
The Committee’s reason for requesting Trump’s records was obvious:
‘The Select Committee’s authority to seek these records is clear. We’ll fight the former President’s attempt to obstruct our investigation while we continue to push ahead successfully with our probe on a number of other fronts.’
Based on these words from the Jan 6 committee, Trump and his allies appear to be in very big trouble.
