A Colorado woman awoke to FBI agents pounding on her door along with state and local officials. Understandably, Tina Peters was “terrified.” But the Mesa County clerk and chief election’s official was just beginning to learn the very uncomfortable truth about the cost of her loyalty to Donald Trump.
Colorado Secretary of State Jena Griswold filed a lawsuit where Peters was accused of breaching voting machine security by allowing an individual who had no authorization to update the county’s voting system software seeking so-called election irregularities that Trump claimed existed. If that was not enough, she lied about it.
Peters was caught when an ultra-right website posted some of the voting system’s passwords. Then, they posted digital copies of the Mesa County voting system’s hard drive. At that point, county officials examined a 24-hour video surveillance of the equipment only to find that someone had shut it down, according to The Denver Post.
So where did Peters turn? The MyPillow guy, Mike Lindell, of course. The rabidly pro-Trump CEO has his own channel that he broadcasts online, Lindell TV. According to the Trump acolyte, Peters, one of the homes searched belonged to a former campaign manager for the gun-toting U.S. Representative Lauren Boebert (R-CO).
Conspiracy theorist Peters spoke on the Lindell channel, ColoradoPolitics.com reported:
‘The FBI raided my home at 6 a.m. this morning, accusing me of committing a crime. And they raided the homes of my friends, mostly older women. I was terrified.’
District Attorney Dan Rubinstein told Colorado Politics:
‘We executed four federally court-authorized operations today to gather evidence in connection with the investigation into the Mesa County Clerk and Recorder’s Office. We did so with assistance from the DA’s office from the 21st Judicial District, the Attorney General’s Office and the FBI.’
Peters revealed that the FBI had gone through her home for “about three hours” and “took all of my electronics.” They even took her phone:
‘Essentially, they were soldiers in combat gear. They were not men in suits with badges. They looked very much like they were in a combat zone — soldiers with automatic weapons and combat gear.’
The country official said Tuesday on Lindell’s show:
‘I refuse to give up. I am more scared than ever for my life, but courage is the key when you do something in spite of fear.I feel that if I was to give up now, I would be giving up on our country. You do the right thing and you see your government come down on you like that, this is the worse nightmare you can imagine.’
Peters claimed that the government was just harassing her:
‘They want to shut me up, shut me out, prosecute me, do whatever they can to villainize and demonize me just to cover up their dirty deeds. I can’t unsee what I’ve seen.’
As a result, Secretary Griswold forced the county to replace all of its voting equipment last August.
Colorado’s Independent Ethics Commission has also begun investigating Peters for violating a Colorado state constitutional gift ban, accusing her of trips on Lindell’s jet and other violations.
