Something broke in the Republican Party and left its members stewing in something like a gangrenous wound, only without the humor. We really hoped the GOP members would find their dignity once the ex-president left. But alas, they all seem to have caught the mean-spirited Donald Trump virus instead. It appears that he has infected nearly all of them. But what about Louisiana’s Senator John Kennedy (R)? Is he not different? Well, let us take a look.
President Joe Biden nominated Saule Omarova as the next Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) top official. It is the place that regulates over a thousand banks’ assets. She is a law professor at Cornell University. While important in her nomination process, this did not sound especially exciting. So what was the problem?
She was born in Kazakhstan which was formerly part of the U.S.S.R. at the time. She went to Moscow State University, came to America in an exchange program, and fell in love with our country. Now, she is an American citizen, according to NPR.
But in Senator John Kennedy’s eyes, she must have hit the ultimate trifecta: a woman, a minority, and strong. Where did the joke-cracking Louisiana senator go? He certainly was rude to Dr. Omarova when he said:
‘I care greatly about this nomination. We’re going to make it happen. I don’t know whether to call you professor or comrade.’
In the background, someone groaned:
‘Oh my goodness.’
Omarova responded with grace:
‘I’m not a communist. I do not subscribe to that ideology. I could not choose where I was born.’
‘Sir, have you no shame? This is an insult to anyone with an accent, anyone who fled communism, anyone born abroad. Your own ancestors were slurred for being born in elsewhere, were they not? Abhorrent. I’ll say what she could not… to hell with you!’
