Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) doesn’t represent what most Congressional Republicans are willing to stand by — she publicly opposes the lies from former President Donald Trump about the integrity of last year’s presidential election, and she is working to hold Trump accountable for his role in inciting the riot at the Capitol last January. No matter the opposition to her work from within her party, she’s continuing at it. As a member of the House committee investigating the Capitol riot, she has an opportunity to participate in a close examination of that incident, but the associated issues go on from there, and in a recent interview, Cheney insisted that Trump must never again win the presidency.

As Cheney pointedly put it:

‘What we saw in particular, in the weeks after the election, was somebody who was willing to go through all the guardrails of democracy. And we know now that’s what [Trump’s] willing to do, and he’s done it. That is why it’s so important that we make absolutely sure that he can never be anywhere near the Oval Office again. He is not somebody that can ever be trusted with the reins of power, because he’s demonstrated that he doesn’t respect the Constitution. He doesn’t respect our form of government and the checks and balances that are so critical to the survival of the republic.’

Although Trump has not officially laid out a campaign for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, it definitely seems as though he’s moving that direction — with the bulk of the Republican Party sticking right by him, even as he continues peddling outright lies about the last election. Not only that, but Trump has also repeatedly sought to justify what took place at the Capitol last January, characterizing the events as a logical consequence of the imaginary election fraud that he claims was responsible for Biden’s win. And through all of this, most Republican leaders have refused to abandon Trump.

Cheney was critical of her fellow Republicans who have taken this path. As she explained things:

‘If you go back and look at what many of my colleagues, almost all of them were saying, in the immediate aftermath of the attack, it was clear that this was the kind of line that can’t be crossed if you believe in our constitutional system. And it’s dangerous for the country and it’s dangerous for our party that people seem now to have lost their courage.’

All of these developments help lay the foundation for something like January 6 to happen again — all because Trump or a copycat didn’t get their way. Read more at this link.
