The Republican Party’s philosophy was once described as “the doctrine that public power should always serve the common good of all those subject to its rule,” and focused on thing like limited taxation, fiscal conservatism, and protecting constitutional freedoms. Today, it’s philosophy is centered on following one man: the twice-impeached ex-president who lost the popular vote twice, Donald Trump.

That kind of loyalty to the wanna-be dictator has turned the party into all but a cult, with punishments to hand out to any member who does not fall in line. Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) and Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-IL) have diverged from the party’s opposition to an investigation into the events of January 6, 2021, joining Democrats in criticizing Trump’s incitement of the insurrection and attempts to overthrow a democratic election. As a result, the House GOP decided to censure them.
According to Reuters:
‘The Republican Party on Friday censured U.S. Representatives Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger for joining Congress’ probe of then-President Donald Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election, calling the Jan. 6 Capitol attack “legitimate political discourse.”‘
Cheney, with a single tweet, reminded everyone what that “legitimate political discourse looked like. It looked like Capitol Police officers beaten with flag poles, tased, and bear-sprayed. It looked like a gallows pole erected in front of the Capitol Building with rioters chanting “hang Mike Pence!” It looked like elected officials hiding in fear, evacuated from the floors of the House and Senate, because they were trying to do their jobs.
