President Vladimir Putin just lost another general he could ill-afford to lose, Lieutenant-General Andrei Mordvichev. Overall, the Russian military has not been doing well. There are the obvious Keystone Kops’ maneuvers such as running out of gas and opening food with the expiration date of 2002. But the soldiers are also dispirited and need moral support. In an attempt to solve this problem, Putin has sent his generals closer to the frontlines, which is clearly more dangerous.
Mordichev was the fifth general Putin lost. The Russian’s death cast him in Chornobayivka, which is located near the Kherson airport. This general was in charge of the 8th General Army of the Southern Military District. Accounts of his death indicated that “fire damage” was the cause, the Ukrainian military was announced on social media early Saturday:
‘As a result of inflicting fire damage on the enemy, the commander of the 8th All-Military Army of the Southern Military District of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, Lieutenant General Andrei Mordvichev, was killed.’
The general staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine put the general’s death notice on the internet. It read, according to The Independent:
‘The commander of the 8th military army of the Southern Military District of the Russian Federation of Lieutenant General Andriy Mordvichev was destroyed as a result of the fire attack on the opponent.’
A least some of the generals have not been using encrypted phones and radios, which has allowed the Ukrainian military to pinpoint their locations and take them out. While this was happening, the Russian military just announced it had used a high-tech hypersonic missile on the Ukrainians. They said it was to take out underground weapons, according to The Daily Beast.
Before this announcement, the Ukrainians reported that “dozens of children” and “700” civilians had been killed during Russia’s bombing campaign. However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky indicated that was probably a low estimate.
The Russians have been focused on taking out civilian gathering locations such as schools, apartments, and civic centers. A drama hall in southern Ukraine was one of their targets. The building was destroyed, but miraculously, most of the 1000 people hiding there were fine.
In addition to Mordvichev, Major Generals Vitaly Gerasimov, Andrei Kolesnikov and Andrei Sukhovetsky had been reported by Zelensky killed. Putin has only acknowledges the death of the latter. The Pentagon announced:
‘NEW: Russia’s deputy Black Sea fleet commander has been killed in Ukraine, Russian-linked officials in Crimea confirm. Andrey Paliy was about to be promoted to rear admiral. Five Russian generals have already been killed in 25 days of fighting in Ukraine.’
Major General of the Russian Army Oleg Mityaev who was the commander of the elite 150th motorized rifle division has been pronounced dead, but that has not been verified.
