The family of the late U.S. Capitol Police officer Brian Sicknick, who died of what were determined to be natural causes very soon after participating in the defense of the Capitol against rioting Trump supporters last year, remains publicly critical of former President Trump.

Brian Sicknick was among the officers assaulted by rioters during last year’s Capitol riot. Circumstances of his time at the Capitol on that fateful day were among the details shared Thursday night by Caroline Edwards, a fellow officer with Brian’s agency who was the first officer injured during the Capitol violence and testified to the committee. “Your brother’s partner, Sandra Garza, issued a statement before the testimony last night,” CNN host John Berman asked Ken and Craig Sicknick, brothers of the late officer, during a Friday broadcast. “She said, ‘Justice for me, justice for Brian would be having Donald Trump in prison, but it doesn’t seem like that ever happens. The man seems to escape justice time and time again, but maybe today will change that. That would be a wonderful thing.’ For you, what would justice be for your brother?”

“I mean, that’s the least that could happen would be him being thrown in prison. That night while he was laughing and cheering on the crowds, he still would wake up in the morning and be able to see his family,” Ken replied. Craig added: “Donald Trump has never paid a price for anything he has done his entire life, any mistake he’s made it’s all been swept under the carpet, it’s all been made to go away. Let’s see if it happens again or if there is actually justice served.”

Asked about what they’d like to see from forthcoming hearings of the riot committee, Ken replied: “Well, I’d like to see the truth come out. There’s a lot of fog out there that just, you know, people — especially the people that are defending Donald Trump — [say] oh, he did this, he called up the National Guard. Well, that was debunked last night. You know, all of the hero that he is. He’s not. By and large, he’s a narcissist, it’s all about him. He couldn’t care less about my brother. Do you know what, I’ll say this, we got calls from a lot of politicians after my brother had passed, including Mike Pence. Not one tweet, not one note, not one card, nothing from [Trump] because he knows. He knows he’s the cause of the whole thing.” The lack of contact from the former president is despite the fact he’s consistently cast himself as a champion of law enforcement. Watch the Sicknicks’ comments below:

Trump is still basically excusing what happened at the Capitol at just about every turn. “The so-called “Rush on the Capitol” was not caused by me, it was caused by a Rigged and Stolen Election!” the ex-president stated this week. In other words, it sounds like he thinks the rioters basically had a point. That stance from the former president helps depict exactly why it would be so dangerous if he somehow became president again — and why those closely allied with him pose a danger to the continuance of democracy.
