New polling data from Morning Consult shows Democrats 11 percent ahead of the GOP on the question of which party’s contender that independents would support in the upcoming Congressional elections. On average across July polling from that source, Democrats’ lead with independents is 8 percent.

The June average of independents’ preferred Congressional picks evidently had Democrats one percent behind Republicans, while the average from the prior month saw the Dems three percent behind the GOP — so Democratic fortunes heading into the midterms appear to be improving, per Morning Consult survey data. While it’s certainly not the only recently developing story in the national political conversation, the public hearings of the House committee investigating the Capitol riot that took place across June might have had some effect on voters’ perceptions of the major parties — especially since Trump remains so prominently at the helm of the Republican Party.

Dems led by four percent with registered voters polled in the new Morning Consult survey showing Dems 11 percent ahead with independents. Significant portions of independents and registered voters surveyed in the new Morning Consult poll indicated they had no opinion or were unsure. With independents, those unsure were 37 percent of the total. With the overall group of registered voters, it was 14 percent. The poll was conducted from July 22 to July 24. The generally positive signs for Dems in recent poll data are noticeably distinct from the generally negative direction for Joe Biden’s job approval. Just 37 percent of all registered voters in the new Morning Consult poll indicated they either strongly or somewhat approved of Biden’s job performance — but it’s 45 percent of overall registered voters who selected the Democratic option when asked which party’s Congressional candidate they’d support this year. 37 percent of independents backed the Democrats.

Another attention-grabbing recent poll of voters’ attitudes related to the midterm elections found Democrats ahead with voters over 65 and represented an apparent gain of 15 percentage points for Democrats in recent months — a change that again broadly corresponds to recent public hearings of the House riot panel, which will be holding additional public hearings later this year as it continues to gather and release evidence. Recent details shared by the panel show that Trump never ordered the deployment of thousands of troops to protect the Capitol on January 6, despite him repeatedly and specifically insinuating he did so.

Another bit of evidence recently highlighted by the riot committee is an apparently originally printed copy of remarks prepared for then-President Trump to deliver the day after the riot. Trump evidently crossed out portions including a push for the rioters’ prosecution and a part that basically amounted to him disowning participants in the violent mob. The committee shared a portion of testimony from Ivanka Trump, the former president’s daughter, who confirmed handwriting on the altered page looked like her father’s. Meanwhile, news emerged this week that the Justice Department is investigating actions Trump took in the aftermath of the last election. The contexts in which they’re evidently doing so include their examination of the scheme to assemble faked electoral votes for Trump from states Biden won.
