House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) appeared on CNN’s State of the Union with co-host Dana Bash and expressed sorrow that her husband Paul had to suffer for something meant for her. She spoke out about the Republicans’ response, which was worse than callous.

Pelosi spoke of the Americans who expressed their desires to vote in the midterms after the speaker’s husband was beaten:

‘[S]o many have said I’m going to be sure to vote because this has gone too far.’

The Speaker called out the members of the GOP who made jokes about her husband’s beating. These Republicans also spread lies about what happened. She pointed the finger at the GOP’s response, saying it was “disgraceful:”

‘Imagine how I feel as the one who was the target and my husband paying the price and the traumatic effect on our family, but that trauma is intensified by the ridiculous, disrespectful attitude that the Republicans — and there’s nobody disassociating themselves from the horrible response that they gave to it.’

Once again, Bash came back to voters questioning whether “you think that turned voters off?”

Speaker Pelosi replied simply:

‘They tell me so.’

So what will be next for the California representative? Pelosi responded that her decision to run involved “family, and also my colleagues.” Any move will be  “forward in a very unified way:”

‘Well, the fact is, any decision to run is about family, and also my colleagues and what we want to do is go forward in a very unified way, as we go forward to prepare for the Congress at hand. Nonetheless, a great deal is at stake because we’ll be in a presidential election. So my decision will again be rooted in the wishes of my family and the wishes of my caucus. But none of it will be very much considered until we see what the outcome of all of this is. And there are all kinds of ways to exert influence.’

Speaker Pelosi should make a decision about her future soon.
