Biden Soars Past Major GOP Competitors In New Polling For 2024

Some of the latest polls of prospective voters’ opinions in the 2024 race for president continue to show Joe Biden solidly defeating Donald Trump — and Ron DeSantis, should the GOP governor in Florida eke out a primary win after all. (DeSantis hasn’t confirmed a campaign but is expected to run.)

Polling conducted by Emerson College early last week and surveying registered voters found Biden two points ahead of Donald Trump nationally, and the same set of data showed Biden six percent ahead should DeSantis be the Republican Party’s nominee. For reference, Biden finished the 2020 election more than four percentage points ahead of Trump on the national level, although that’s obviously not the level on which presidential elections are decided at present. Instead, it’s state by state.

Other recent polls have found similar outcomes in potential match-ups. Results from Cygnal showed Biden and DeSantis tied, with the current president running one percentage point ahead of Trump. For Reuters, Ipsos showed Biden nine percent ahead of DeSantis and five percent ahead of Trump, all of which was nationally. That Ipsos data was evidently from registered voters, while the Cygnal numbers reflected responses of those deemed likely voters. The Ipsos poll included an interesting scenario, asking voters for their selections if the general election ended up largely a three-candidate race, with Biden running against Trump and DeSantis — Trump as an independent and DeSantis as the GOP nominee. Biden ended up leading by a lot (well into the double digits) if that happened. Trump, though, continues to hold commanding sway in the GOP primary field, leading in polls and endorsements.
