Republicans can complain, but free speech means the hits to their nonsense rhetoric about the Bidens and their other political opponents will keep coming.
Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) took to Twitter on Tuesday to express predictable outrage about the terms of a plea agreement that Hunter Biden was taking, with limited admissions to criminal offenses. Hunter, a son of the president, is a favorite target of Republicans and their conspiracy theories, but the deal he reached involves admissions of tax offenses and the unveiling of an alleged gun offense, and in connection to the latter, Hunter was set to participate in a Pretrial Diversion Agreement. That portion of the arrangement means Hunter would be pursuing what was compared to rehab. Drug use is what made his possession of a firearm susceptible to criminal accusations anyway.
“So Hunter Biden gets a special plea deal, slap on the wrist – probably won’t do a day of time – while DOJ charges Trump as a spy and tries to put him in prison forever,” Hawley complained. “Two standards of “justice”… What we really need to know is: did Burisma pay off Joe Biden to the tune of $5 million … did #China pay off the Bidens … and why did Joe Biden keep thousands of pages of classified docs.”
Trump is not charged “as a spy.” The law under which he is facing charges is simply called the Espionage Act. This is the exact same failure to grasp the basic facts recently seen with Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.). In addition, there is what appears to be absolutely no credible evidence that Joe Biden received a $5 million bribe — which wouldn’t even make sense, considering the alleged aim was opposition to a prosecutor that much of the West already opposed!
