A recent report from The Washington Post that provides extensive updates about the progress of investigations by Special Counsel Jack Smith that touch on areas of interest around Trump reveals how these prosecutors have put Rudy Giuliani and other lawyers in Trump’s circles under scrutiny.
In short, they are looking at the infamous scheme to assemble essentially sham slates of 2020 electoral votes for Trump in states where Biden had been victorious. Sometimes — but not always, these efforts were cast as some sort of backstop meant for activation and usage only if needed depending on the outcome of pending legal challenges, though even that excuse of just having another option ready and waiting is difficult to maintain. After all, there was essentially no credible indication that the lawsuits would turn out in Trump’s favor. The record after the 2020 presidential election was consistent in that none of the many legal cases that were brought ever resulted in a credible authority agreeing that any part of Biden’s win was the result of fraud.
“Investigators have sought to determine to what degree these lawyers — particularly Rudy Giuliani, Jenna Ellis, John Eastman, Kurt Olsen and Kenneth Chesebro, as well as then-Justice Department lawyer Jeffrey Clark — were following specific instructions from Trump or others, and what those instructions were,” the Post said, discussing the attempts to assemble those sham electoral votes. That’s not necessarily where investigators’ interest in these legal figures around Trump ends, though witnesses have been “extensively questioned” regarding that issue, the Post reported. Giuliani has been reported to have been a key figurehead behind the ploys to assemble those so-called alternate electoral votes.
Giuliani has appeared for questioning by federal investigators as part of the investigation that Smith is leading into attempts after the 2020 presidential race to keep Donald Trump in power. Rudy also remains under threat of potential charges in the related Georgia investigation from Fani Willis.
