Will Hurd, a former Republican Congressman from Texas who is now running for his party’s presidential nomination for the 2024 election, is speaking out again against former President Donald Trump amid a back-and-forth over comments from Hurd at a recent conservative event in Iowa.

In the quintessentially primary-relevant state, Hurd asserted to those assembled that Trump was making his own latest run for the presidency to avoid prison as his legal troubles mount. Trump was already charged with dozens of felony criminal offenses in a federal case related to his handling of sensitive government documents from his time in office, and he’s expected to soon be charged in another case that’s anticipated from the same source — Special Counsel Jack Smith — and covers schemes after the last presidential election meant to secure another four years for Trump despite his documented loss.

In Iowa, Hurd faced jeers from the crowd, and Trump complained about the former Congressman’s comments in commentary of his own posted to Truth Social, his alternative social media site. Trump maligned Hurd’s electability, besides other complaints. “Donald, I served on the front lines of the war on terror, then in Congress. I’ve dedicated my life to fighting for America. You turned down your opportunity over some bone spurs and then applauded an assault on America on Jan. 6,” the former Congressman wrote Saturday. “Also, Donald, facts are stubborn things. Hillary beat you in my district in 2016, and I won. And you lost in 2020.”

Trump continues to claim otherwise, holding onto his allegations of widespread fraud in the 2020 presidential race. These claims of extensive misconduct in that year’s elections have never been conclusively accepted by any established authority directly responsible for the administration or judicial oversight of elections around the U.S. and widely accepted as credible.

Meanwhile, Hurd — whose poll numbers from the GOP primary have been low — is still hoping to reach the level of documented campaign support needed to qualify for the first debate in the primary, which will happen next month.
