Jamie Raskin Exposes House GOP’s Impeachment Push For Discrediting Itself

Republicans in the House are now infamously clamoring for impeachment proceedings against President Joe Biden, though some are sticking to the claimed need for an inquiry before a final vote, and some — though not many, comparatively speaking — are questioning the entire endeavor.

The problem is that the investigative efforts that Republicans have already undertaken have produced evidence that discredits the continuing probe.

Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) outlined some of these Republican issues in prepared remarks issued this week. Republicans just recently unveiled what they cast as a formal impeachment inquiry, though Rep. Daniel Goldman (D-N.Y.) argued that simply announcing such an inquiry didn’t actually provide the Republicans with any additional investigative powers. Raskin, meanwhile, is the top Democrat in this Congress on the House Oversight Committee, and he showed how the evidence that Republicans have already obtained contains no indications of financial connections between President Joe Biden and the ostensibly corrupt business dealings about which they’re so concerned. Neither has there been an indication of a criminal act by the president, though Republican accusations of a “Biden crime family” abound.

“The Committee’s interview of Eric Schwerin, who served as then-Vice President Biden’s bookkeeper from 2009 to 2017, established that he never saw any transactions into or out of the then-Vice President’s bank account related to business conducted by any Biden family member,” Raskin said. “None of the SARs allege, or even suggest, any potential misconduct by President Biden, nor do they show any involvement by President Biden in Hunter Biden’s business relationships. None of the bank records have shown any payments to President Biden, as even Republicans have conceded. There is no evidence of any wrongdoing by the President. So, let’s ‘follow the evidence and follow the facts.’ The evidence shows President Biden engaged in no wrongdoing.” Raskin also accused Republicans of just capitulating to Trump’s interests.
