During a recent press conference, Rep. Pete Aguilar (D-Calif.), who is chairman of the House Democratic Caucus, described former President Donald Trump as both morally and mentally “unfit” for the presidency, which he’s now seeking again.
“Over the weekend we heard directly from the leader of the Republican Party, who confirmed what House Democrats had been saying all of last week: the MAGA impeachment is being done at the insistence of Donald Trump,” Aguilar said on September 19. “It is a revenge tour of his prior impeachments. This is a desperate attempt to hurt President Biden politically. Even other Republicans will admit that there is no evidence. What the country saw from the former President in a rambling and incoherent interview is someone who is morally and mentally unfit to serve.”
Do House Republicans even have an agenda besides doing whatever Trump tells them? In an interview conducted for NBC, Trump characterized the impeachment inquiry recently launched in the U.S. House that is targeting President Joe Biden as essentially some kind of consequence of the first impeachment proceedings that Trump faced while in office. Those related to pressure imposed by the then-president and his team on Ukrainian leadership to pursue investigations that could have been favorable for Trump’s re-election campaign.
“They think I was treated very unfairly. I mean, when I was impeached for a perfect phone call, and now it turned out to be perfect. I hope you will admit that, at least. Because I was right, 100 percent right,” Trump claimed, though there has been no comprehensive exoneration for the former president in this area, although the Senate voted down conviction following that first impeachment. Trump has also explicitly pushed for impeachment in the context of Biden in commentary on Truth Social, his alternative social media platform. “Biden is a Stone Cold Crook-You don’t need a long INQUIRY to prove it, it’s already proven. These lowlifes Impeached me TWICE (I WON!), and Indicted me FOUR TIMES – For NOTHING! Either IMPEACH the BUM, or fade into OBLIVION. THEY DID IT TO US!” he said in August.
