In a speech delivered this week for a public affairs school at the University of Minnesota, former GOP Rep. Liz Cheney condemned her fellow Republicans who have failed to meaningfully respond to — let alone denounce — the recent suggestion by former President Donald Trump of the execution of ret. Gen. Mark Milley, who until recently served as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

“For the most part, the response has been silence,” Cheney observed, later adding about the former president’s comments: “Every American must condemn that. Every American must stand against that.”

Republicans in elected office or prominently seeking it have reacted similarly to the embrace by Trump and others of many who participated in the assault on the Capitol on January 6, 2021 — which included damaging physical violence against police officers who responded to the scene. Despite the implication of the former president essentially jumping onboard with what in reality constituted physical attacks on police, even if he glosses over that reality and doesn’t explicitly spell out such support, many Republicans even still stick right by Trump as he runs again.

“Fundamental to the health of our Nation and democracy is that we have an apolitical military, a nonpartisan military,” Milley, meanwhile, asserted in a letter addressing troops shared online. “In the military, we take an oath to the United States Constitution and that oath is clear — it says that we will support and defend the Constitution against all enemies foreign and domestic. We must always maintain fidelity to the Constitution and the founding idea contained therein — that we are all born free and equal in the eyes of the law.”
