Bizarrely, former President Donald Trump now infamously insisted during a recorded speech in Florida that Hezbollah and other terror organizations, along with their allies, opposing Israel in the Middle East were “smart.” He wasn’t morally endorsing their aims, rather characterizing these groups as supposedly strategically impressive — which, in factual terms, is also way off base.
But there’s more. Amid the war between Russia and Ukraine, many on the far-right have prominently clamored for distancing the U.S. from Ukraine as it continues its national defense against Russian incursions. Also sometimes circulating has been the faulty notion that the U.S. itself is somehow responsible for the war there, whether through North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) activity or through the weapons deliveries the U.S. has made to Ukraine. Whether threatening to abandon Ukraine as it fights for its survival or boosting the idea of absolving Vladimir Putin for the deadly violence that his regime has perpetrated, these MAGA ambitions boost the Russian government. And now Putin’s evident support has been welcomed elsewhere — by the Middle Eastern terror group Hamas.
Is MAGA — abbreviating, of course, Trump’s longtime campaign slogan — even at a foundational level a legitimately pro-American movement at all? Trump has infamously talked up the idea of even significantly undercutting NATO, imagining a scenario in which a member country was attacked and the U.S., under his leadership, didn’t fulfill its treaty obligations for assistance because of supposed bills.
“If you are a MAGA GOP member who has sided with Russia over Ukraine — from Kevin McCarthy to MTG — let’s be clear: you are also now on Team Hamas,” Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) claimed on X (formerly Twitter).
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) keeps pushing for completely dialing down the U.S. assistance that’s been provided to Ukraine, which would effectively boost the Russian military’s agenda of widespread death and destruction.
