Liz Cheney Rips Republicans For Going Along With Trump’s Brazen Delusions

Former GOP Congresswoman Liz Cheney of Wyoming is continuing to express opposition to the rise of Rep. Mike Johnson (R-La.) to the role of Speaker of the House. Johnson helped lead the opposition from elected Republicans in Congress to the 2020 presidential election results, in the context of both the failed case filed with the Supreme Court by Texas authorities challenging Biden’s wins in several states and the eventual rounds of voting in the House on whether to certify the results.

“One of the reasons why somebody like Mike Johnson is dangerous is because… you have elected Republicans who know better, elected Republicans who know the truth but yet will go along with the efforts to undermine our republic: the efforts, frankly, that Donald Trump undertook to overturn the election,” Cheney remarked on a recent podcast episode, as relayed by The Guardian. Cheney also worried about the near future. “And I think that the country unfortunately will come to see the measure of his character,” she separately stated.

She also tied all of what Johnson did to subservience to the interests of former President Donald Trump. “In my view, he was willing to set aside what he knew to be the rulings of the courts, the requirements of the constitution, in order to placate Donald Trump, in order to gain praise from Donald Trump, for political expedience,” Cheney told the host.

Since the last presidential election, the threshold for raising an objection to electoral votes and forcing further debate and votes in Congress on the objection has been raised well beyond the earlier level of just a member from each legislative chamber (the House and Senate), though other threats could linger. Trump is generally expected to make it to the general election next year in the ongoing presidential race absent any dramatic incapacitation from one of his wide-ranging cases in court.
