Democrats on the House Oversight Committee, who are led in this Congress by Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.), are continuing to call for forcing testimony from longtime Trump ally Rudy Giuliani. The context is his incessant promotion of dubious conspiracy theories implicating the Bidens in supposedly wide-reaching corruption.

A key focus of these right-wing theories about the president’s family is the involvement by the president’s son Hunter Biden with the now infamous Ukrainian energy company Burisma. A member of Ukraine’s parliament — well, at least until recently — who worked generally in tandem with Giuliani and met with him around these claims of misconduct has been criminally charged in Ukraine with treason. This individual, Oleksandr Dubinsky, was accused of covertly working to advance Russian ambitions.

“The main task of this organization was to take advantage of the tense political situation in Ukraine and discredit our state in the international arena,” Ukrainian authorities said, referring to a group in which Dubinsky was allegedly involved. And he was tied to Giuliani!

“Oversight Committee Democrats renew our calls for Chairman Comer to subpoena Rudy Giuliani and Lev Parnas so the American people can hear about how the lie at the heart of this impeachment was first peddled by Donald Trump and Giuliani in 2018,” a spokesperson for Democrats on the panel said in recent days. “Comer and Committee Republicans twice voted against issuing subpoenas to Giuliani and Parnas because they know that at every turn the evidence has debunked their allegations against President Biden.”

As this statement references, the theories of corruption implicating the Bidens have been used as the foundation for an impeachment inquiry targeting the president. The idea, in general terms, is that the president was somehow meaningfully connected to ostensibly corrupt business dealings by members of his family, mostly his son Hunter Biden. There hasn’t been much public action on the inquiry in recent weeks, though the Oversight Committee, led by Rep. James Comer (R-Ky.), keeps seeking sprawling testimony and publicizing quickly debunked claims ostensibly supporting their anti-Biden conspiracies.
