In a new interview with former Biden administration official-turned-MSNBC host Jen Psaki, former GOP Congresswoman Liz Cheney of Wyoming put the rhetorical spotlight on Republicans in the House and Senate who she believes would help facilitate destructive consequences of a potentially future return by Trump to power.

“We’re of course now in a situation where you know the Republicans that are in the majority in the House certainly, and many of the Republicans in the Senate, won’t check him, won’t stand up to him,” Cheney said. “And then if the courts issue rulings with which he disagrees, he has been clear […] it’s clear that neither one of those other entities will be able to be a check on his power.”

The current Speaker of the House, Louisiana Republican Mike Johnson, has already faced extensive criticism for his part in ginning up opposition after the last presidential election to the results as they stood moving forward. Johnson was a leading figure in the House GOP’s support for a failed Texas lawsuit challenging Joe Biden’s election victories in several states and also helped advance opposition amid Congressional voting on the prospective certification of electoral votes that the now president had won.

Cheney expressed concerns about how far potential refusals by Trump if he regains power to follow court orders could actually go, and if amid such problems, Republicans in legislative power are resistant to take much any action, what would transpire next?

Republicans continue broadly supporting Trump, both in elected office and among everyday voters associating themselves with the party, and he is on track to win the party’s presidential nomination for 2024 — even as he also faces four criminal cases and even a real possibility of time in jail if he’s convicted. Special Counsel Jack Smith is currently pushing for the Supreme Court to take up a dispute over Trump’s potential presidential immunity in his January 6-related case so appeals can be more quickly resolved and trial can proceed.
