Ex-Congressman Rips GOP Christians For Going Along With Hateful Donald Trump

Adam Kinzinger, an ex-GOP Congressman from Illinois, responded to a characteristically furious holiday message from Donald Trump this week by asserting the former president is simply “not a Christian.”

In the specific post from Trump’s social media site Truth Social to which Kinzinger was replying, Trump said that President Joe Biden and Democrats currently in power were worse than foreign dictators, a category that would include Russia’s Vladimir Putin, whose war against Ukraine continues. Trump also again misrepresented the basic reality of current life in the United States, claiming the country to have “open borders” (it doesn’t) and screaming about inflation, which actually continues a general decline per government numbers. Trump also derisively referenced an environmental protection plan known as the Green New Deal, despite the government never actually implementing it.

Problems extended from there. “I’m going to go out on a NOT limb here: this man is not a Christian. If you are a Christian who supports him you don’t understand your own religion. Trump is weak, meager, smelly, victim-ey, belly-achey, but he ain’t a Christian and he’s not “[God’s] man,”” Kinzinger wrote online.

Others have also questioned how anyone could have the idea that Trump is the guy for people who claim to be religiously devoted. As he undertakes his currently unfolding run for the White House, he’s made troubling indications of the direction that another four years in office for him would take. He’s expressed interest in issuing pardons for participants in the Capitol violence of early 2021, using the levers of government power to pursue serious consequences like prosecution for his own enemies, and restarting the Muslim-targeting travel bans from his earlier time in office, among other specific policies. He’s also spoken antagonistically towards the very continuance of the U.S. in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) under the current, cooperative system.
