Rep. Ted Lieu (D-Calif.) is among those expressing concern and pushing for change after a set of bribery allegations implicating President Joe Biden and his son Hunter Biden essentially imploded. A man responsible for the claims, which tied the Bidens financially to the Ukrainian energy company Burisma, was indicted by federal authorities here in the U.S. for allegedly lying.

Yet, Republicans — who’ve even kickstarted an impeachment inquiry in the House targeting the president — have run with the bribery idea. Even if they’ve technically included the caveat it was an allegation, they’ve given the story extensive air-time, and some — like Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) — have taken the long dubious claims especially seriously. Republicans like the House Oversight Committee’s Rep. James Comer (Ky.) and Sen. Chuck Grassley (Iowa) jumped onboard with taking it all at least somewhat seriously, leading a charge that culminated with the public release of materials documenting the now criminally charged informant’s claims.

“When will Republican Representatives and Senators apologize for aiding and abetting a foreign power?” Lieu posted on X, the platform formerly called Twitter. Lieu is also currently the vice chair of the House Democratic Caucus.

Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.), another member of Lieu’s committee, said that Comer should resign. Swalwell also similarly accused Comer and fellow Biden impeachment probe leader Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) of essentially advancing the ambitions of Russian intelligence. (The indicted individual responsible for the claims has been tied to such circles.)

The Republicans running the impeachment probe against Biden have turned recently to Hunter Biden’s work in contemporary art, advancing the idea that his production and sale of art pieces may be part of what they’ve deemed influence peddling. No apparent evidence has tied the president to Hunter Biden’s art sales. Republicans have raised complaints about a purchaser of the younger Biden’s art separately receiving an… unpaid role on a federal commission related to cultural heritage, a category including art history.
