Responding to another delay in ex-President Donald Trump’s criminal proceedings related to his alleged post-2020 election schemes to retain power, former GOP Congresswoman Liz Cheney of Wyoming insisted Wednesday that the former president should face trial on these claims before this year’s presidential race culminates in balloting this fall.

“Delaying the January 6 trial suppresses critical evidence that Americans deserve to hear. Donald Trump attempted to overturn an election and seize power. Our justice system must be able to bring him to trial before the next election. SCOTUS should decide this case promptly,” Cheney wrote online.

Challengers across a multi-state series of disputes have sought to block Trump from the ballot entirely on the basis of his argued involvement in the violence of January 6, 2021, via incitement of the crowds, some of whom originated at his rally in the city that day, but those efforts have generally fallen short so far.

Trump alleges he is the victim of plots specifically targeting this year’s elections in his wide range of courtroom hurdles moving forward at all, though there is no evidence of prosecutors trying to make an impact on the presidential race in which Trump is participating rather than simply attempting to secure justice for alleged anti-democratic schemes.

Cheney responded specifically to the U.S. Supreme Court agreeing to hear further arguments amid Trump’s case alleging post-2020 election interference attempts. Though he has repeatedly lost, Trump contends that he holds wide-ranging legal protections by mere virtue of his time in office that should stop the case. He claims immunity for actions taken as part of his official responsibilities, and that’s where he’s trying to group his expansive ambitions seen after the 2020 presidential race concluded. The appeals arguments already forced now ongoing delays to a trial originally scheduled for March.
